A film festival looks at the issues of home and conservation around the world
LEGENDARY BRAZILIAN ACTRESS Sonia Braga is a force to be reckoned with in the film Aquarius. She plays a widow who simply refuses to sell her house to developers, in spite of the large sum of money and subsequent threats they throw at her.
This is the house where she built a loving home for her late husband, children and grandchildren. This is the house where she beat cancer. This is where she learnt how to stand on her own feet. No amount of money can buy the memories made in every room over years - even if the building is crumbling.
Aquarius debuted in the main competition section at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival. And though it walked away empty-handed, it went on to earn several awards at other festivals and a spot on many critics' year-end best film lists. Many praised Braga's performance as a career-defining one, suggesting that the actress - then 66, now 68 - had rarely given a richer performance. Old, as they say, is gold.
