Three-in-one
Check out a trio of new exhibitions at Gillman Barracks this weekend. At FOST gallery, American-born, Hanoi-based artist Phi Phi Oanh has a new solo show that transfigures the commonplace in Vietnam. She applies lacquer to everyday objects such as ceramic tiles, a straw mat and stacks of bricks to highlight both the object and the traditional Vietnamese practice of lacquer painting. It seems simple, but Oanh's practice is complex and laborious as she seeks new ways to expand the possibilities of lacquer.
Next door, Yeo's Workshop showcases some of its best artists, namely Mike HJ Chang (Taiwan), Merryn Trevethan (Australia), Xue Mu (China) and Filippo Sciascia (Italy). Titled Apertures, the show explores through paintings, photographs and sculptures the notion of light and its role in visual perception.
Also opening is Yavuz Gallery's inaugural sculpture exhibition featuring four artists from Thailand and Myanmar, namely Pinaree Sanpitak, Thasnai Sethaseree, Utai Nopsiri and Soe Yu Nwe. Expect some intriguing pieces from these emerging and established names.
