[TOKYO] Tokyo stocks opened sharply lower Friday, following a weak lead from Wall Street and as the yen's ongoing strength weighed on exporters.
The benchmark Nikkei 225 index at the Tokyo Stock Exchange fell 1.48 per cent, or 221.56 points, to 15,516.17 shortly after the opening bell, while the broader Topix index of all first-section shares lost 1.60 per cent, or 20.31 points, to 1,252.33.
