HetNet to allow for better connectivity
Devices can switch seamlessly between different wireless networks. By AMIT ROY CHOUDHURY
SINGAPORE'S push to become a "smart nation" will result in the use of a number of new communication technologies that will usher in an era of ubiquitous connectivity. One of these is called HetNet or heterogenous networks. HetNet will form an important backbone of the proposed Smart Nation Platform (SNP) that will help connect all government agencies so that they can share data with one another.
HetNet is a type of network that allows optimal use of the wireless spectrum as devices can switch seamlessly between various types of wireless networks like 2G, 3G, 4G and WiFi, depending on signal strength. The Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) is expected to conduct trials for this technology in the coming months.
To find out more about this technology, BizIT spoke to Ruckus Wireless, a US-based wireless connectivity technology provider whose customers include Singapore telcos. Ruckus is one of the pioneers of HetNet.
