Uncovering the beauty of the oceans
Underwater photographer David Doubilet will share his passion with Singaporeans later this month. RACHEL LOI reports
IN his 45 years of working for National Geographic, underwater photographer David Doubilet has been approached by countless young, aspiring photographers wanting tips on how to gain a foothold in the venerable magazine.
"I always say to them, before you even think about asking me how to get this job, tell me about the pictures that you're making - what you are shooting, what you are interested in," says the 67-year-old, who published his first work in the magazine in the early 1970s.
The common misconception is that the key to getting the job is hard work and dedication, but according to Mr Doubilet, having a specific interest in a unique topic is far more valuable. "Promising to work endless hours, and to give your heart and soul is a given. That's a known . . . It's not about taking pictures, it's about visually explaining your interest and passion to the rest of the world.
