[SINGAPORE] The Republic took a step towards including renewable energy sources in its future energy mix yesterday with the launch of a micro-grid in Pulau Ubin.

The micro-grid, which will be fed with electricity from solar photovoltaic (PV) panels and biodiesel generators, will act as a test-bed for the impact of intermittent electricity supply on grid operations.

"Whether it is solar or any other form of renewable source, they can augment our energy mix in Singapore. The key challenge with these renewable sources is that they are intermittent," said S Iswaran, Minister in the Prime Minister's Office and Second Minister for Home Affairs and Trade and Industry at the launch yesterday.
