Singapore's Master of Modern Art
IN this 10th anniversary of Anthony Poon's death and against the backdrop of the National Gallery's Reframing Modernism exhibition, which looks at the mid-20th century modern art movement in both the West and Asia, Sundaram Tagore Gallery has rolled out a rare exhibition of the paintings of the artist.
Transformation and Color: Anthony Poon, Pioneer of Singapore Abstraction is held in collaboration with the late artist's estate and is a reminder that while Poon was known for his large-scale sculptural commissions in the latter part of his career, he first focused on painting and had an "unswerving commitment to abstraction, and had built a reputation for his luminous compositions of line and colour", says Yang Shuyin, the gallery's associate director.
It was time to do a commemorative show, says Ms Yang, since the artist's last retrospective was in 2009.
