GROUND handler Sats is setting up a S$37 million central kitchen at an airport in Bengaluru - its first such investment in the Indian market, it said on Monday.

The 14,000 square metre (150,695 square foot) facility at Kempegowda International Airport is slated to open in 2022, with capacity for 170,000 ready-to-eat meals a day.

The central kitchen is expected to serve both India's domestic market and overseas customers through production, distribution and export of food products.

Sats, which used to be known as Singapore Airport Terminal Services, called the move "a key milestone in the expansion of the group's network of kitchens to supply its growing customer base across the region".

The group added that the planned central kitchen complements its investments in technology to extend the shelf life of foods and reduce food waste.

Two Sats associate companies - aviation food-solutions provider TajSATS and ground handler AISATS - are also active at the Bengaluru airport.
