Healthtech startup Halodoc raises US$80m in funding led by Astra unit

HALODOC, a healthtech startup based in Indonesia, has raised US$80 million in Series C funding led by Astra Digital Internasional, a subsidiary of Indonesian conglomerate Astra International.

Other new investors in the financing round include Temasek, Telkomsel's TMI, Novo Holdings, Acrew Diversify Capital Fund and Bangkok Bank. UOB Venture Management, Singtel Innov8, BliBli, Allianz X, Openspace Ventures and other existing investors also participated.

The funds raised will be used to deepen Halodoc's presence in key healthcare verticals across Indonesia. Founded in 2016, the startup runs a digital healthcare platform that includes a mobile app and website allowing customers across Indonesia to have live consultations with more than 20,000 licensed doctors in the country.

Customers can order lab tests to be carried out in their homes. They can also use the app to order medication from over 4,000 participating pharmacies, which can deliver within an hour.

Last year, Halodoc launched an appointment service that connects over 2,000 healthcare providers - including hospitals, clinics and laboratories - to patients in over 180 cities across Indonesia.

The startup aims to provide better access to healthcare for people in Indonesia. According to the World Bank in 2018, there are only four physicians to every 10,000 people in Indonesia, while the global average is 16 to every 10,000 people.

During the pandemic, Halodoc expanded its appointment service to help Indonesians book Covid-19 tests and vaccinations, and rolled out a drive-through Covid-19 testing service.

Indonesia's Ministry of Health also appointed the startup to help roll out the national vaccination programme. Halodoc helped with the vaccination of over 50,000 citizens across two islands in the first 23 days of the vaccination programme, the company said.
