Bank Negara chief declares banking system resilient

She says stress tests show the system can withstand shocks, even loan defaults by highly leveraged entities

Kuala Lumpur

THE governor of Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) has pronounced the country's banking system sufficiently robust, with its stress tests indicating that it can withstand various shocks, including recessionary conditions and corporate defaults.

Presenting the central bank's 2014 annual report on Wednesday, Zeti Akhtar Aziz said the quarterly stress tests simulated adverse conditions, including that of "default by entities that are highly leveraged".
