Bitcoin and the art of market manipulation: an inquiry into value

The amount of attention springing up over the cryptocurrency says nothing about its intrinsic value

Many of the platforms used by investors to buy and sell bitcoin are opaque and lack the basic safeguards expected of an exchange, meaning that the market is prone to manipulation, sometimes by the exchange operators themselves.


2017 was the year of vindication for bitcoin believers. The cryptocurrency is up more than 1,500 per cent so far this year, making the digital wallets of those who hopped on board the hype train that much fatter than the "no-coiners".
