Mercedes CLS review: A cut above
The Mercedes-Benz CLS retains its signature low-cut roof but has been transformed under the skin
Barcelona
MOST of what you need to know about the Mercedes CLS is already there in the letters of its model name, which stand for "Curvy Little Sedan". Well, they don't, but they might as well.
As before, to make a CLS you start with the stately bones of Mercedes' E-Class and add shapely flesh. Come to think of it, now in its third generation, the CLS has grown larger, so it's hardly "little". And it's always been billed as a "four-door coupe", so the "sedan" part goes out the window, too. But the "curvy" bit is very much in evidence. The CLS model line has always been pretty, but this new one looks amazing. It has a shark-nosed front end with menacingly slim lights, and there's a supple body to match the predator face. Having declared that curves are back in, Mercedes has ditched sharp lines for more smoothly flowing ones, with a result that looks more lissome than muscular. I know which I prefer in a companion.
