American Express, StarHub among first in Singapore to roll out Apple Pay

APPLE Pay is gaining traction in Singapore, with American Express and StarHub among the first companies that announced tie-ups with Apple Pay on Tuesday.

American Express has become the first credit card provider in Singapore to bring its customers Apple Pay.

Starting Tuesday, card members with a card issued directly by American Express can add their eligible personal and corporate cards and pay with their Apple devices at participating stores where contactless American Express payments are accepted. In addition, card members can use Apple Pay for payment within participating merchant apps.

"American Express is focused on bringing our card members innovative, convenient and secure ways to pay, and they will be the first to experience those benefits with the seamless experience of using Apple Pay in Singapore," said American Express Singapore country manager Cheng Heng Chew.

"We want to offer value to our card members and give them the flexibility to pay the way they want to, which is increasingly through mobile devices," Mr Cheng said.

From Tuesday onwards, StarHub customers can also make mobile payments with Apple Pay.

StarHub head of business strategy Yeong Mun-Ling noted that with digital commerce fast catching on with Singapore consumers, StarHub wants to be at the forefront of enriching its customers' lifestyles using technology.

"Being among the first Apple Pay-enabled merchants in Singapore, we are pleased that customers can now conveniently tap to pay at StarHub Shops using their iPhone and Apple Watch," she said.

Visa country manager for Singapore and Brunei Ooi Huey Tyng said Apple Pay will be available to Visa cardholders in Singapore soon.
