Amex apologises for SMSes to cardholders about temporary card suspensions

CARD issuer American Express apologised on Thursday (Apr 27) for SMSes sent out to cardholders about the temporary suspension of their credit cards.
Cardholders had received SMSes informing them about the suspension of their Amex cards earlier in the day. The messages indicated that the cardholders’ total unsecured interest-bearing balance from all banks in Singapore supposedly exceeded 12 times their monthly income for three consecutive months.
In a Facebook post, Amex said that cardholders should disregard the message, and that no further actions are required on their part.
“This message was sent out in error. Rest assured, this is not a scam nor a phishing attempt, and we are urgently looking into this issue,” it said.
The company added that it is currently experiencing high call volumes, and apologised for the inconvenience caused.
