TRADING in the month of August ended on Friday with a clear verdict from a common gauge of the worth of the local stock market - the market capitalisation of all 765 companies (just one less from a month ago) on the bourse as at end-August was worth less than in July, by some S$6 billion, to be precise.

Blame that largely on the big falls in the agriculture, multi-industry, properties and transport, storage and communications sectors which collectively lost nearly S$11 billion in value, while the finance and manufacturing sectors held up with gains of some S$4.4 billion over that period.
