THE pandemic year of 2020 has yielded a silver lining for private insurers offering Integrated Shield (IP) hospitalisation plans.
A confluence of factors has helped boost underwriting performance of IP portfolios. Five out of seven IP insurers ended 2020 in the black, helped partly by the pandemic, which suppressed claims as policyholders postponed non-emergency treatments.
In 2019, the picture was the reverse: Five insurers were in the red, and two were profitable.
