A SPLIT has emerged between the market and experts, with a slight majority of economists expecting the US Federal Reserve to raise interest rates this week while financial futures are betting on a December hike.
Five out of nine economists and strategists operating in the region polled by The Business Times said that they expected the Fed to raise its target for short-term US interest rates when the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) concludes its September meeting early Friday morning Singapore time. That was corroborated by a Reuters poll of 72 US economists a week ago that found a slight majority expecting a September hike.
