Brazil arrests person linked to SembMarine's consultants
BRAZILIAN authorities have arrested on bribery-related claims a person related to consultants that Sembcorp Marine hired, the rigbuilder announced early Monday.
Guilherme Esteves de Jesus was arrested by Brazilian authorities as a result of allegations made by former Petrobras engineering manager Pedro Jose Barusco, Sembcorp Marine said.
Brazilian media in February reported numerous claims about bribery surrounding oil giant Petrobras, including allegations that SembMarine and Keppel Corp were involved. Both Singapore companies have refuted those claims, and highlighted their policies against bribery and corruption.
SembMarine said it has launched an internal investigation and engaged lawyers. The company said it received a copy of a plea bargain between Mr Barusco and Brazilian authorities, in which Mr Barusco made allegations against de Jesus.
De Jesus was arrested on March 27.
SembMarine said it is unable to comment on whether the allegations are true because its own investigations are ongoing.
"The company and the group have a strict anti-bribery policy and do not condone any action that will result in the violation of any country's anti-corruption laws," SembMarine said in an announcement. "The company and the group also do not and will not tolerate any improper business conduct."
SembMarine shares traded at S$2.95 at 11.33am on Monday, lower by 0.7 per ent or 2 Singapore cents.
