HONG KONG shares began sharply lower Wednesday (Sep 7) morning, extending their losing streak into a fifth day following another drop on Wall Street, on fears central banks will continue to ramp up interest rates for some time to quell inflation.

The Hang Seng Index sank 1.49 per cent, or 286.86 points, to 18,915.87.

The Shanghai Composite Index slipped 0.35 per cent, or 11.31 points, to 3,232.14, while the Shenzhen Composite Index on China’s second exchange lost 0.40 per cent, or 8.35 points, to 2,104.92. AFP
