Shanghai: Stocks claw back losses to end higher

    [Hong Kong] Shanghai shares closed slightly higher on Tuesday, reversing earlier losses in late trading as speculation of state-linked buying swirled.

    The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index edged up 0.17 per cent, or 4.87 points, to close at 2,864.37, after falling more than one per cent in morning trade.

    But the Shenzhen Composite Index, which tracks stocks on China's second exchange, lost 0.93 per cent, or 16.21 points, to 1,729.08.

    In Hong Kong the Hang Seng index ended down 0.72 per cent, or 146.57 points, at 20,288.77.
