SINGAPORE shares closed lower on Wednesday, with the Straits Times Index down 0.8 per cent or 25.75 points to 3,249.08 as Asian markets were rattled following the Trump administration's announcement of plans to impose 10 per cent tariffs on a new list of Chinese imports worth US$200 billion.
About 2.24 billion shares worth S$1.21 billion in total changed hands, which worked out to an average unit price of S$0.54 per share. Losers outnumbered gainers 272 to 158.
The most actively traded stock was Ezion Holdings, which fell S$0.004 or 4.5 per cent to S$0.085 with 60.2 million shares changing hands. Other actives included Genting Singapore and Yangzijiang Shipbuilding.
