Singapore shares open 0.2% up on Wed

    SINGAPORE stocks opened 0.2 per cent higher on Wednesday, with the Straits Times Index advancing 6.4 points to 2,894.62 as at 9am.

    The blue-chip index gained after a strong overnight lead on Wall Street, which had been buoyed by a crude oil rally and positive data on consumer confidence in the United States.

    About 37.5 million shares worth S$31.8 million in total changed hands as at 9am, which worked out to an average unit price of S$0.85 per share.

    The most actively traded counter was commodities trader Noble Group, which fell S$0.02 to S$0.420 with five million shares changing hands. Other actives included Ying Li International and LionGold.

    Gainers outnumbered losers 82 to 40, or about two up for every one down.
