Singapore stocks rise at Friday's open; STI up 0.1%

    SINGAPORE stocks edged up in early trade on Friday (Nov 12) after tech shares saw gains on Wall Street overnight.

    The Straits Times Index (STI) rose 0.1 per cent, or 4.17 points, to 3,242.24, as at 9.01 am.

    Gainers outnumbered losers 101 to 49 after 133.6 million securities worth S$85.9 million changed hands.

    Medtech firm QT Vascular 5I0 was the top gainer of the morning in terms of volume, rising S$0.002 or 20 per cent to S$0.012 after 35.8 million shares were traded.

    Singapore Press Holdings T39 was also actively traded at open, rising S$0.01 or 0.4 per cent to S$2.32 with some 4.3 million units changing hands.

    Index counter ComfortDelGro C52 was among the most actively traded securities on Friday morning, with 4.1 million shares traded. The counter fell S$0.03 or 1.9 per cent to S$1.53.

    Among the trio of local banks, only OCBC saw gains at the open. Its shares were up S$0.01 or 0.1 per cent to S$11.83 as at 9.01 am.

    DBS was down 0.3 per cent or S$0.08 to S$32.15, while UOB slipped S$0.08 or 0.3 per cent to S$27.84.

    Over on Wall Street, stocks closed mixed on Thursday (Nov 11), a day after hotter-than-expected inflation reports dampened investor sentiment and halted a streak of record closing nights.

    The benchmark Dow Jones Industrial average fell 0.4 per cent to 35,921.23, while the broad-based S&P 500 gained 0.1 per cent to 4,649.27. The tech-rich Nasdaq Composite Index added 0.5 per cent to 15,704.28.

    Meanwhile, European stocks ended at a record high on Thursday after relief around property developer China Evergrande benefited China-focused mining stocks, while a strong earnings season buoyed broader sentiment.

    The pan-European Stoxx 600 closed 0.3 per cent higher at a new peak of 485.29 points, with the mining sector rallying 3.7 per cent in its best day in 4 months.

    Elsewhere in Asia, Tokyo stocks opened higher on Friday (Nov 12), following overnight gains of US technology shares.

    The benchmark Nikkei 225 index rose 0.5 per cent to 29,426.32, while the broader Topix index added 0.7 per cent to 2,028.55.
