Singapore stocks rise at Thursday's open; STI climbs 0.1%

SINGAPORE stocks rose in early trade on Thursday (Feb 10) after US stocks performed well overnight.
The Straits Times Index (STI) was up 0.1 per cent or 2.11 points to 3,422.15 as at 9.03 am.
Gainers outnumbered losers 111 to 42 after 105.8 million securities worth S$138.1 million changed hands.
One of the most active counters by volume was Catalist-listed Jiutian Chemical C8R . The chemical company traded up 2.3 per cent or S$0.002 to S$0.091 with 8.3 million shares trading hands.
Golden Agri-Resources E5H was also among the most heavily traded securities on Thursday. Shares of the company traded flat at S$0.285 with 6.5 million shares trading hands.
Other heavily traded securities included Disa 532 and Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) T39 . Shares of Disa rose by 16.7 per cent or S$0.001 to S$0.007. SPH shares dropped 0.4 per cent or S$0.01 to S$2.32, following an announcement that the company exercised its termination right for Keppel Corporation's offer.

The trio of local banks were mixed at the open. DBS D05 traded flat at S$36.98, while UOB U11 shares grew 0.2 per cent or S$0.06 to S$32.86 and OCBC O39 dropped 0.6 per cent or S$0.08 to S$13.14 as at 9.03 am.
Over on Wall Street, US stocks ended in green for a second consecutive day on Wednesday, with improving investor sentiment and better US Covid-19 trends ahead of a key inflation reading. The Dow Jones industrial Average finished up 0.9 per cent at 35,768.06. The broad-based S&P 500 gained 1.5 per cent to 4,587.18, while the tech-rich Nasdaq Composite Index jumped 2.1 per cent to 14,490.37.
Meanwhile, European shares surged on Wednesday to their biggest daily gain in 2 months. The pan-European Stoxx 600 climbed 1.7 per cent to 473.33, with automakers leading gains.
Elsewhere in Asia, Tokyo stocks opened higher on Thursday after solid gains in the US. The benchmark Nikkei 225 index rose 0.8 per cent or 226.24 points to 27,806.11 at the open, while the broader Topix index added 0.6 per cent or 11 points to 1,963.22.
