Singapore stocks rise at Tuesday's open; STI up 0.3%

SINGAPORE shares opened higher on Tuesday, tracking overnight gains on Wall Street.
The Straits Times Index (STI) rose 0.3 per cent or 9.74 points to 3,219.48 as at 9am. Gainers outnumbered losers 109 to 30, with 93 million securities worth S$41.4 million changing hands.
Sembcorp Marine was the most actively traded counter with 26.5 million shares worth S$5.9 million traded within the first two minutes of market open. The counter rose 7 per cent or 1.5 Singapore cents to 23 cents.
Oceanus also saw brisk trading, with 13.9 million shares worth S$0.6 million changing hands as at 9.02am. Its shares edged up 2.2 per cent or 0.1 Singapore cent to 4.6 cents.
Among index stocks, Thai Beverage was actively traded, with 2.3 million shares worth S$1.8 million traded as at 9.02am. The counter rose 0.6 per cent or 0.5 Singapore cent to 79 cents.
The trio of local banks were all higher in early trade. OCBC led the way, up 0.6 per cent or S$0.07 at S$11.89 within the first two minutes of trading. Meanwhile, UOB advanced 0.5 per cent or S$0.14 to S$26.06, while DBS put on 0.1 per cent or S$0.02 to S$29.33 as at 9.02am.

Over on Wall Street, stock indices finished at fresh records Monday on the latest signs of an accelerating US recovery as Covid-19 vaccinations become more widely deployed in the world's biggest economy. Activity in the US services sector also hit an all-time high in March as orders surged amid a jolt of pent-up demand.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average advanced 1.1 per cent to close at 33,527.19, an all-time high, the broad-based S&P 500 gained 1.4 per cent to 4,077.91, also a record, while the tech-rich Nasdaq Composite Index surged 1.7 per cent to 13,705.59.
European markets were closed in observance of Easter Monday.
Elsewhere in Asia, Tokyo stocks opened higher on Tuesday following Wall Street's rally. The benchmark Nikkei 225 index climbed 0.3 per cent or 94.75 points to 30,184.00 in early trade, while the broader Topix index edged up 0.04 per cent or 0.78 point to 1,984.32.
