[TOKYO] Tokyo shares opened modestly lower Tuesday, following sharp losses on financial markets in the United States and Europe the previous day in a gloomy start to 2016.
The benchmark Nikkei 225 index at the Tokyo Stock Exchange dropped 0.28 per cent, or 52.22 points, to 18,398.76 in opening deals, while the broader Topix index of all first-section shares fell 0.33 per cent, or 4.98 points, to 1,509.67.
