Tokyo stocks close up 0.94% to new seven-year high

[TOKYO] Tokyo stocks rose 0.94 per cent on Thursday, notching up a five-day winning streak and hitting a fresh seven-year high, thanks to a lower yen and record close on Wall Street, while reports said the ruling coalition was set for a win in upcoming elections.

The Nikkei 225 index at the Tokyo Stock Exchange was up 166.78 points at 17,887.21, its best finish since July 2007, while the Topix index of all first-section shares climbed 0.76 per cent, or 10.85 points, to 1,440.60.
