Tokyo: Stocks close down as stronger yen hits exporters

[TOKYO] Tokyo stocks ended lower Thursday as a stronger yen hit exporters, while Panasonic and Hitachi plunged as they warned a China slowdown was weighing on their financial results.
The benchmark Nikkei 225 index at the Tokyo Stock Exchange fell 0.85 per cent, or 146.26 points, to 17,044.99, and the Topix index of all first-section shares fell 1.24 per cent, or 17.46 points, to 1,388.81.
