The benchmark Nikkei 225 index at the Tokyo Stock Exchange shed 1.70 per cent, or 282.25 points, to 16,319.11 in opening deals, while the broader Topix index of all first-section shares lost 1.71 per cent, or 22.75 points, to 1,307.97.
