THE Oxbridge rivalry is one steeped in history and tradition. One of the chapters of this storied rivalry is the varsity race - a set of rowing races on the River Thames between the Oxford University and the Cambridge University Boat Clubs in London - that was first held in 1829 but has been an annual fixture since 1856.

Cambridge graduate associate professor Toh Han Chong, deputy director and senior consultant at the National Cancer Centre Singapore (NCCS), says that the Oxford and Cambridge Society of Singapore (Oxbridge Singapore) revived the annual Singapore boat races two years ago along Marina Bay, after having held only one in 1997 along Kallang River.
