A LORRY crane toppled onto its side at an ExxonMobil lubricant plant project site at 35 Shipyard Road on Monday (Mar 13).

Images of a Huationg Holdings crane toppled on its left side were first seen on the “Complaint Singapore Unrestricted” Facebook page.

The crane’s outriggers, which normally maintain the stability of the crane, did not appear to be extended.

In response to queries from The Business Times, an ExxonMobil spokesperson said that the crane was being operated by a contractor at the time and only the crane operator was injured.

While the crane operator suffered some minor abrasions, he received immediate medical attention and a doctor assessed him as fit to return to work.

“We are cooperating with the relevant authorities in their investigation and will work closely with the contractor company to ensure that the appropriate next steps are taken safely,” the spokesperson said, adding that all work was stopped at the project site after the incident.

The Ministry of Manpower extended the heightened safety period with additional measures in February this year.

The additional measures include higher maximum fines for Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) Act Subsidiary Legislation breaches.

As at Feb 10, there were four workplace fatalities since the start of the year.
