THE Energy Market Authority (EMA) and energy company Shell have committed an additional S$4 million with support from Enterprise Singapore (ESG) to grow local energy startups, as part of a renewed partnership.

The extra funding brings EMA and Shell's joint commitment to S$8 million, from S$4 million previously, the three parties said in a press statement on Wednesday.

The partnership first started in 2019 and has supported 12 startups under the Shell StartUp Engine programme. It is a global innovation programme that helps startups develop their solutions and expand their market reach through Shell's network.

Awarded projects include a universal battery pack project for personal mobility devices by Anzene, sustainable charging infrastructure for unmanned delivery vehicles by Pylon City, as well as a solar photovoltaic deployment project by Quantified Energy Labs.

ESG supports the partnership under the Open Innovation initiative, which leverages lead demand from government agencies and business corporations to support small and medium-sized enterprises and startups in developing innovative solutions.

This means energy startups are able to participate in projects that allow them to build up new capabilities that the market requires, and in turn, gain a track record for scaling up further, said ESG chief executive Png Cheong Boon.
