Fire at SP PowerGrid's Pasir Panjang sub-station

A FIRE broke out at SP PowerGrid's Labrador sub-station located at Pasir Panjang Road at about 3pm on Wednesday. The Singapore Civil Defence Force was called in.

The SP PowerGrid sub-station houses 230 kilovolt (kV) transformers, and the company is currently looking into the cause of the fire and assessing the extent of damage.

"All staff on site were safely evacuated, and no injuries were sustained. The fire did not result in any electricity supply disruption," SP PowerGrid said in a statement.

An electrical sub-station is a subsidiary station of an electricity generation, transmission and distribution system, where distribution voltage is transformed into utilisation voltage using transformers.

Formed in October 2003, SP PowerGrid manages Singapore's electricity and gas transmission and distribution networks.

It is the management company of SP PowerAssets, the sole provider of electricity transmission and distribution services in Singapore and one of the four major subsidiaries of SP Power.

SP Power is wholly owned by Temasek Holdings and has assets in both Singapore and Australia.
