SOME northern Chinese cities may switch back to coal from electricity and gas this winter, prompted by insufficient government subsidies, government think tanks said in a report published on Thursday.

Beijing has launched a dramatic push to cut coal consumption by shifting to electricity and natural gas from coal, in a bid to rein in emissions and ease air pollution in its northern cities including Beijing.
