EQUITY crowdfunding is about to become a reality in Singapore, and regulators will now have a chance to see if the experiment is worth all the trouble.

In essence, policymakers will have to figure out if it is possible, feasible and desirable to strike another point of balance between investor protection and issuers' access to capital.

Recently-launched Crowdfunding platform FundedHere offers accredited investors - defined as those with at least S$2 million of net personal assets excluding the primary residence - a chance to buy a shareholding or a piece of debt in a startup. Hot on its heels is Capbridge, a rival platform by Clearbridge Accelerator and the Singapore Exchange that has already obtained a provisional capital markets services licence.
