HYFLUX has won a US$48 million contract to build a desalination system for Saudi Arabia.
The containerised desalination system, which will be among the largest of its kind, will be placed together with the existing Yanbu Desalination Plant on the Red Sea coast 350km north of Jeddah. It will boost the current plant's capacity to supply water to the industrial city of Yanbu, and nearby Medina region.
The new desalination plant comprises 10 modular containerised units which are compact and flexible, making it easy to deploy and install.
The 10 units, each with a capacity of 3,000 cubic metres a day, will use Hyflux's proprietary Kristal ultrafiltration membrane technology for the pre-treatment phase of the seawater osmosis desalination process.
"We are honoured to be given this opportunity to work with SWCC (state-owned Saline Water Conversion Corporation). This project is a great example of Hyflux's ability to provide quick, cost-effective solutions for our customers," said Olivia Lum, Hyflux executive chairman and group CEO.
The project is set to be completed in about eight months and is expected to contribute to the firm's results for the current financial year.
