Hyflux opens largest desalination plant in Algeria

HYFLUX has officially opened the Magtaa Desalination Plant, the biggest seawater reverse osmosis desalination plant in Algeria.
With the capacity to desalinate 500,000 cubic metres of seawater daily, Magtaa Desalination Plant will supply water to Oran in Algeria as well as to nearby neighbouring provinces under a 25-year water purchase contract with L'Algérienne Des Eaux and Sonatrach. Hyflux will operate and maintain the plant.
"(The plant) will be instrumental in meeting Algeria's water needs. This project strengthens our presence in the region. It also demonstrates our technology as well as engineering and construction capabilities for municipalities in need of sustainable and cost-effective water solutions," group chief executive Olivia Lum said.
"I am delighted that Hyflux has continued to distinguish itself in international markets, leveraging its many experiences from similar projects in Singapore and other parts of the world. This development is another laudable milestone for Singapore's water industry and I look forward to more local water and environmental companies following in Hyflux's footsteps," said Minister for the Environment and Water Resources, Dr Vivian Balakrishnan.
The plant is Hyflux's second in Algeria after the Souk Tleta Desalination Plant, which has been in operation since 2011.
