THE first time I ever bet on a horse was at the old Selangor Turf Club. It was sometime in 1992, and the historic racetrack was about to be bulldozed to make way for the iconic Kuala Lumpur City Centre.
My host, who worked for a prominent Malaysian public-listed company, attempted to steer me towards the horses he knew stood a good chance of winning. But I waved him off and went for the horses with the longest odds.
Not surprisingly, I was unlucky that day and left the racetrack somewhat poorer than when I arrived.
