Japfa fishes for growth in aquaculture

The smallest of its five protein pillars has been growing its sales volume steadily over the past few years.

THE chief executive officer of Japfa is looking to at least double the group's nascent aquaculture segment - the smallest of its five business pillars which generates just a fraction of the revenue of its other pillars - in the next three to four years.

In a recent interview with The Business Times, Japfa's Tan Yong Nang said that aquaculture currently makes up about 7 per cent of its 52.4 per cent-owned PT Japfa Comfeed Indonesia's revenue.

While the group's primary growth drivers will still be poultry in Indonesia, swine in Vietnam and dairy in China for some time, the aquaculture segment has also been growing steadily over the past few years.

Aqua-feed sales volume rose 22 per cent and 15 per cent in FY18 and FY19, respectively; since Japfa's listing in 2014, aquaculture has increased feed sales volume by almost 40 per cent, while revenue grew…
