JTC launches tender to raise solar capacity of Jurong Island
JTC has called for a tender to solarise 60 hectares of interim vacant land and the rooftops of five of its buildings on Jurong Island. They include the Jurong Rock Caverns and Jurong Island Checkpoint.
This will bring Jurong Island’s total solar energy capacity to 103.2 megawatt-peak (MWp), an increase from the current 12.3 MWp generated from the island’s companies’ rooftop installations. It is equivalent to powering 24,300 four-room Housing and Development Board flats annually, JTC said on Wednesday (Jan 25).
This tender supports Singapore’s Green Plan 2030 to transform Jurong Island into a sustainable energy and chemicals park. It is also part of JTC’s SolarLand and SolarRoof programmes to use available rooftops and temporary vacant industrial land across Singapore for solar power generation, which will subsequently be exported to the national grid. Applications must be submitted via Gebiz by Mar 17.
The government offers alternatives to companies interested in expanding into solarisation. These include leasing solar panels in return for discounted electricity or leasing roof or open carpark space to solar vendors to generate revenue.
Besides solarising these conventional spaces, JTC is also working with interested Jurong Island companies to deploy floating solar in spaces located within their water frontage as well as between their foreshore structure and the shoreline of the companies’ boundary.
