KEPPEL has signed a multi-year strategic framework agreement with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to collaborate on data centres, subsea cables and renewable energy initiatives worldwide.

As part of the tie-up, the companies will work together to accelerate artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning adoption across Keppel’s operations. This will be done through its AI platform that will be built with machine learning platform Amazon Bedrock, said the global asset manager on Thursday (Dec 5).

The Business Times understands that AWS will invite Keppel first to provide proposals to fulfil its infrastructure requirements. This could include providing AI-enabled data centre capacity, building new subsea cables, as well as providing access to renewable energy projects.

Keppel also noted that the partnership also aims to expand AWS’ sustainable data centre infrastructure globally. This includes identifying suitable land for new data centres, and using low carbon or renewable energy to power the properties.

Additionally, the tie-up will also help bolster network connectivity through subsea cable systems, thus improving AWS’ global network, scalability and reliability.

The agreement was signed on Dec 2 by AWS chief executive Matt Garman and Keppel’s CEO Loh Chin Hua, at an annual learning conference held in Las Vegas in the US.

AWS is a cloud infrastructure service provider with a 31 per cent global market share as at the third quarter of 2024, according to data from Statista. This puts it ahead of Microsoft’s Azure platform at 20 per cent, and Google Cloud at 11 per cent.

Keppel highlighted that it is developing a cable system, which will be “the largest capacity high-speed transmission cable” across the Pacific Ocean when fully commissioned.

The duo will also collaborate on energy-related technologies to help decarbonise power consumption in applicable grids. This includes net zero or low carbon power generation and energy storage solutions.

They will also work together to accelerate generative AI innovation, including a series of workshops to design an AI platform that will boost Keppel’s growth strategy. The platform will be built using AWS services.

Shares of Keppel were trading 0.4 per cent or S$0.03 higher at S$6.86 as at 11.17 am on Thursday.
