M1 joins telco price war with new, upsized mobile data plans

A PRICE war appears to have emerged in the mobile data space in Singapore - even before the entry of a fourth telco - as M1 on Thursday introduced new and upsized data plans, a day after MyRepublic and Singapore Telecommunications (Singtel) unveiled theirs.

M1's new plans - mySIM+ 15 and mySIM+ 20 - have been added to the telco's range of postpaid plans that allow mobile subscribers to not commit to a two-year contract. For S$15 a month, the mySIM+ 15 plan offers 1GB data, 100 minutes of calls and 600 SMS/MMS. For S$20 a month, mySIM+ 20 offers 4GB data, 150 minutes of calls and 800 SMS/MMS.

Customers who sign up for M1's other mySIM plans will also get to enjoy enhanced data bundles of up to 20GB.

Additionally, M1 launched a new upsize data feature, at S$5.90 a month, for new and recontracting customers to boost their data bundles by up to 12GB. This is applicable for M1's Lite+ smartphone plans and above.

On Wednesday, Singtel announced a similar new feature known as DataX2, an add-on that allows customers to double their mobile data allowance for S$5.90 net a month, as part of efforts to expand its data-centric mobile plan offerings following the introduction of its SIM Only Plan last year.

On Wednesday too, fourth telco hopeful MyRepublic unveiled its proposed mobile offerings, ahead of its winning the telco licence. For existing and new MyRepublic broadband customers, they can choose between a 2GB plan at S$6 a month (excess data to cost S$8 per GB) and an unlimited data plan at S$60 a month.
