SINGAPORE Airlines’ (SIA) former chief operations officer (COO) Mak Swee Wah has joined the board of directors at Sats as an independent, non-executive director, as well as a member of its audit committee.
Mak’s appointment to the board was effective from Sunday (Sep 10), and approved by Sats’ board of directors after considering its nominating committee’s recommendation.
“With his diverse experience and background in the aviation business, his expertise will bring added value and synergy to the board and enhance the existing competencies and skills within the board,” said Sats on Monday.
Mak, 63, owns 21,235 ordinary shares of Sats amounting to a 0.001 per cent stake in the company.
He holds a master’s degree in science majoring in operational research, and a Bachelor of Science with first class honours in accounting and finance from the London School of Economics and Political Science.
Mak retired from SIA after 40 years with the group, where he previously chaired the group’s Covid-linked Restart Task Force, as well as its regional wing, SilkAir.

Both his roles as COO and executive vice-president of operations at SIA were taken over by the group’s then-chief financial officer Tan Kai Ping.
Mak remains a director of Sentosa Development’s subsidiary Mount Faber Leisure Group, a position he has held since April 2022.
News of Mak’s appointment to Sats’ board comes a week after the group announced Temasek-backed Sustenir Group’s Pier Sigismondi as an independent non-executive director.
Shares of Sats ended Friday down S$0.03 or 1.2 per cent at S$2.55.
