New bus stop concept launched in Jurong East
Aim of project by DP Architects is to make waiting fun
Singapore
A NEW concept bus stop designed to "make waiting fun" has arrived in Singapore.
Named Project Bus Stop, the concept was conceived by a group of architects from DP Architects as a corporate social responsibility initiative, and will demonstrate how ground-up energy and creativity can be harnessed for urban and social innovation.
National Development Minister Lawrence Wong wrote on his blog about the project: "I'm very encouraged to see these young architects come forward with their ideas to make our public spaces more vibrant. We hope to have more Singaporeans play an active role in shaping the use of our public spaces."
This ground-up design solution features a bus-stop with free WiFi, handphone charging points, interactive smart boards that provide content and services such as bus arrival timings, e-books download and journey planner, a green roof, bicycle parking, and even a swing. It also showcases artwork by local illustrator Lee Xin Li.
DP Architects director Seah Chee Huang, who spearheaded the initiative, said that the team was looking forward to the public's reaction to the new setting, and hoped that the latter would appreciate how social spaces are able to serve as a platform for fun and enrichment.
"We also hope this project will encourage more fellow professionals to step forward and collaborate actively in the design of our everyday public spaces, as well as inspire the community to take greater ownership in shaping their own environments."
Project Bus Stop was implemented through a multi-agency collaboration comprising the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore, Land Transport Authority, National Environment Agency, National Library Board, National Parks Board, Singapore Land Authority and Urban Redevelopment Authority.
It is located along Jurong Gateway Road at Jurong East Central and its new features will be in operation for a year from August 2016. The public is encouraged to share their experiences of using the bus stop at AUDE@ura.gov.sg.
