Nintendo establishes Singapore unit to accelerate South-east Asia business
The maker of video-games series ‘Pokemon’ and the Switch gaming console is also considering setting up a local unit in Thailand
[SINGAPORE] Japanese video game giant Nintendo on Tuesday (Sep 30) announced the creation of a business unit in Singapore, aimed at “accelerating (its) business in South-east Asia”.
It added that it was also considering establishing a local unit in Thailand for a similar purpose.
The video game market in the region generated about US$5.9 billion in revenue in 2024. This is expected to grow to US$6.1 billion by the end of 2025 and further to US$7.4 billion by 2027, according to Statista.
Nintendo is the maker of popular video game series Mario and Pokemon, as well as the gaming consoles Game Boy and Switch.
Its Singapore unit was established on Sep 26 and will have a capital stock of S$8 million, with Takahiro Miura set to be its managing director. The parent company has a market capitalisation of 16.6 trillion yen (S$145 billion).
Nintendo’s games and consoles in Singapore are currently officially distributed by Maxsoft and Convergent Systems.
