OCBC has created a new chief sustainability officer role that will be filled by Mike Ng with effect from Aug 1.

The move comes after OCBC established a board sustainability committee in February this year.

Ng has been the bank’s head of sustainability office for global wholesale banking – a division responsible for small and medium-sized enterprises and large corporates – since June 2022.

He first joined the bank as head of structured and project finance in 2010, before expanding his role to drive the offerings of sustainable finance solutions among large corporates in 2018.

Over the last five years, he has advised corporate clients across different industries on their net-zero transition.

In a press statement on Monday (Jul 24), OCBC credited Ng for helping the bank make significant headway in the renewable energy sector by financing solar and wind farm projects worldwide. He was also instrumental in the bank’s commitment to cease financing for new coal-fired power plants in 2019, it added.

“The diversified nature and size of the OCBC Group, coupled with the catalyst role that we play in the society, required us to curate the role of a chief sustainability officer differently from other organisations,” said chief executive officer Helen Wong.

Highlighting how the bank recently stepped up its climate action efforts, Wong said the new role will require strong business acumen as well as deep expertise, not just in sustainability and climate change, but also in financial products and services.

“Mike is thus a natural fit. He is highly regarded as a sustainable finance veteran with an innovative and forward-looking mind.”
