SEATRIUM ’S floating and stacked energy storage system will be ready for operations in the first quarter of 2024.

The system, said to be the first in South-east Asia, will function as a large-scale battery that stores energy during off-peak periods, and dispenses it during times of high electricity demand.

This will help in managing mismatches in electricity supply and demand, and regulating second-to-second fluctuations in the power grid, said Seatrium and the Energy Market Authority (EMA) on Thursday (Oct 19). It is also able to manage the intermittent nature of solar power – which could shift throughout the day due to rain and cloud cover.

The project, which was awarded to a consortium led by Univers, is part of a S$10 million partnership between Seatrium and EMA to develop marine sector energy solutions, announced in 2020.

The new storage system, which is stacked in nature, will have a deployment footprint that is 40 per cent lower than land-based energy storage systems.

Seatrium and EMA said this could help overcome the Republic’s land constraints.

It will have a maximum storage capacity of 7.5 MWh, and is able to meet the electricity needs of more than 600 four-room HDB households for one day in a single discharge.
