SEMBCORP Industries on Wednesday (Feb 23) announced that its wholly owned subsidiary Sembcorp Energy UK (SEUK) has secured a 15-year contract for a 150 megawatt (MW) battery storage.

This brings its total battery capacity to 420 MWh (megawatt hour ) in the UK. A MWh is equivalent to 1,000 kilowatts of electricity generated per hour.

This 150MW tranche, expected to be operational by 2023, is part of the company's planned 360MW battery energy storage system - set to be one of Europe's largest - at its Wilton International industrial site.

Batteries can supply power and other services to the national grid within a few milliseconds, providing a secure and stable energy system that will aid the UK's low-carbon transition, said Sembcorp Industries in a statement.

Shares of Sembcorp Industries ended Wednesday at S$2.46, down S$0.05 or 2 per cent.
