SEMBCORP Marine (Sembmarine) on Tuesday said it is partnering grid operator SP Group to install an additional 4.0 megawatt-peak (MWp) of solar energy across seven rooftops at its Tuas Boulevard Yard.

The new solar panels, together with existing solar panels that were installed in 2018, will supply nearly 60 per cent of power for the yard's steel fabrication facility during peak production periods, both companies said in a press statement.

The marine and offshore engineering group had previously signed an agreement with SP Group to install an initial 4.5MWp of rooftop solar panels at Tuas Boulevard Yard's steel fabrication facility in 2017. The new agreement between Sembmarine and the grid operator "is an extension of both companies' successful partnership", the companies said.

After the installation, the yard will have a new solar power capacity of 8.5MWp and can deliver up to 10,400 megawatt-hour of electricity a year, which is enough to power more than 2,300 four-room flats.

The system can likely reduce the yard's annual carbon emissions by more than 4,200 tonnes - equivalent to removing some 1,300 cars from roads - and result in significant utilities savings.

"Sembcorp Marine recognises that it can and must contribute to global decarbonisation and sustainable development," said Sembmarine's president and chief executive Wong Weng Sun. Sembmarine said it has plans to reduce its annual carbon emissions by 15,000 tonnes by 2025.

The installation will likely begin in July 2021 and is targeted for completion in May 2022. Both companies added that they are also exploring the deployment of more rooftop solar and other sustainable energy solutions at the yard.

The solar energy will be integrated and optimised through SP Group's Green Energy Tech, an energy management solution which uses smart tools such as sensors and artificial intelligence to manage and monitor the usage of solar power.
