Siemens named Outstanding Energy Services Provider
SIEMENS is the recipient of the Outstanding Energy Services Provider of the Year Award at this year's EENP Awards. It has been providing its services in the field of energy efficiency in Singapore for many years now. The company does energy studies and implements energy saving, energy monitoring and analytics solutions for its customers, enabling them to achieve their energy reduction goals.
"We are deeply honoured to receive this prestigious award. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our customers for their trust and confidence in us. This award also brings huge responsibility for us to keep working hard to help our customers achieve their energy goals," Anoop Sharma, energy management consultant, Digital Enterprise Services Asean, Siemens Pte Ltd, says in an interview with The Business Times.
On the road to recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic, digital transformation has become more crucial than ever. "We believe that by digitalising you can achieve sustainability and energy efficiency goals as well. It is with the combination of OT (Operational technology) with IT (Information technology) that all automation and energy efficient implementation also becomes transparent. Therefore, customers reduce energy wastage and actually become more efficient using data from their assets," says Anoop, who is a certified energy auditor at Siemens.
"Energy manager Pro" is one such Siemens app which can be deployed on premises or cloud to monitor energy consumption remotely and define the key performance indicators to avoid wastage. Siemens also builds custom application suites for customers' sustainability goals.
In his view, improving energy efficiency is one of the most cost effective ways to address the challenges of energy cost, energy security and global climate change.
"On average, energy costs account for up to 10 per cent of all production costs. In energy intensive industries, the percentage can even go up to 40 per cent. Yet it is possible to transform energy into a genuine added value with which you can achieve savings of as much as 30 per cent or more.

"This can be done by understanding your energy consumption via processes and assets; implementing solutions to upgrade to energy efficient solutions; and monitoring to analyse with transparency."
Electrification of manufacturing, buildings and transportation is a standard and a country can attain energy security by increasing efficiency and savings. In effect any energy saving measure helps to mitigate global climate change.
"Energy efficient production means more than simply reducing energy consumption, carbon emissions, or costs - it also involves linking energy and production data to analyse and optimise not only energy consumption but also the energy productivity of machines, plants and processes. These measures provide the opportunity to achieve all-round improvements in process productivity and efficiency."
He says sustainability is embedded in Siemens' business activities. "It is a part of our portfolio, our operations, our governance - our DNA. In 2015, Siemens launched an extensive sustainability programme for all locations worldwide, setting aside 100 million euros to improve energy efficiency by 2020. The programme oversaw 65 million euros in investment before ending in 2020."
Energy costs decreased by about 13 million euros per year because of the measures taken. In all, 33 projects were implemented as part of the energy efficiency programme. The company also offers energy performance contracting to reduce emissions and costs. Its worldwide customers have benefited from this offering including customers in Singapore.
As for other new energy efficiency initiatives in the company, he says: "Siemens is the first global industrial player that set itself the target of becoming CO2 neutral in all its operations by 2030. The company is thus underlining the need for businesses to lead by example and contribute to decarbonising the economy in this century - as set out in the Paris Agreement. With our technologies, we help customers across various industries permanently improve energy efficiency and reduce CO2 emissions with a positive business case."
Siemens supports customers during its roadshows and events to understand the benefits of utilising such products and services.
"We are also providing customers with pilots and demonstrations of how our solutions work by even linking our own operations as proof. We have a dedicated team of engineers with deep domain knowhow in this field that are looking into how to make our products and services even better to support sustainability efforts of an organisation."
Siemens is a technology company focused on industry, infrastructure, transport and healthcare. From more resource efficient factories, resilient supply chains, and smarter buildings and grids, to cleaner and more comfortable transportation as well as advanced healthcare, the company creates technology with purpose adding real value for customers.
By combining the real and digital worlds, Siemens says it empowers its customers to transform their industries and markets, to transform everyday life for billions of people.
